Live and Cuddly

I started listening to NoMeansNo while attending art school in Seattle in the early 90’s. My friends and I got out to probably one live show per week. NoMeansNo was from nearby in Canada, so they played Seattle frequently. I watched them perform a lot, and they never disappointed.

They made a conscious choice to not sign with a major label. I think that would be hard to resist. Musical integrity was more important to them than fame and fortune. Therefore, they were able to make exactly the music they wanted to. Thirty years later, they’re still making and touring music. If they didn’t love it they wouldn’t have kept at it. I find this all very inspiring.

I’ve always enjoyed drawing from photos of live concert performances. Be it jazz, folk, punk, rock whatever. The intensity and passion of the moments captured are thrilling to me. This footage is gritty and raw, and that fits the music. It’s probably time for me to go see another concert. It’s been a while.
