New Artwork

November 17, 2011

Joe Curren was kind to allow me to make a painting from one of his images. His photo of a pelican flying above a wave at Rincon captivated me. One of my favorite experiences while surfing is watching them fly by. When I was a kid there weren’t that many around, due to the use of DDT in farming. Now that they don’t use that anymore there is an abundance of them in my area. I love it.

This painting was done on an old hollow-core door, and finished with one of Joe’s frames. It’s on display at Surf Indian at the moment. Since I used his photo as a reference, I’ll be giving him a portion of the sales.

The Uncaring…

November 14, 2011

I was looking through some old art files of mine this morning and came across this marker sketch I did sometime around 1994. I used to draw a lot of cartoon characters back in the day. The title of the piece is “The Uncaring Face of Exhilaration”. I’ve always poured a lot of meaning into my work, even with my cartoons. This was an unabashed depiction of how I feel we should be while surfing: stoked out of our minds. All cool is lost in a moment of pure fun. Any apprehensions this character carries with him daily are lost in the moment. I still enjoy this drawing.

This has got to be one of the best band shots I’ve ever seen. It was taken by Norman Seeff. I have so many good memories listening to these guys.

11 (coming soon)

Ha! I had to update this post due to the fact that the ASP miscalculated and Kelly still has one more heat to go before winning his 11th world title. It’s good to know that as professional as surfing intends to be, it’s still a bunch of guys who would rather be surfing and can’t be bothered with precise math calculations. I’m sure Kelly will pull it off.

Here’s a funny little video reenactment of what actually went down made by Surfing Life.
