The New Batch

September 19, 2012

My cranial crockpot has been brewing in my studio for a while now. I’ve been cooking up a new batch of painting to show down at the Boardroom International Surfboard show next month at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. If you live in the area, please come out and show your support for visual art and surfboards!

This has been an interesting year for me in a lot of ways. We had our first child just over a year ago, which is a huge and great life change. My art business and busy-ness have grown. It feels really good to have so much interest in my artwork. In the midst of these things, I’ve been trying some new directions with my art, using some materials that prior to this I was unfamiliar with. It’s been a very trying experience, but I think an important one. Part of this experimental year has been not doing preliminary sketches. Basically, I’m kind of treating my painting surface as if it were a page in my sketchbook and seeing where the ideas take me. I don’t think I recommend this method. You may find new methods and ideas, but they come at a cost. Many of these paintings could have been five other paintings that I sanded off or painted over. I don’t regret the experience.

I’ll post individual pieces from this photo over the next few weeks.

Raise the Roof!

September 6, 2012

My studio was in desperate need of a new roof. I got one this week, thanks to my friend Kyle. I helped a bit, but he did most of the work. Now I need to get back to work. See ya.
